WHAT is Sinusitis?
Sinusitis is the inflammation or swelling of the tissues lining the sinuses and the drainage pathways, leading to blocked sinuses. It is caused by a variety of factors and can be quite challenging to treat. With over 31 million adults across the US suffering from sinusitis, symptoms often persist despite medication. This condition adversely affects the lives of both adults and children. At Jupiter Sinus & Allergy, we are dedicated to guiding you on a journey toward reclaiming your health.
WHAT Can Cause Sinusitis?
Chronic sinusitis is the result of a multitude of factors, including:
- Infections
- Allergies
- Bacteria
- Inflammation of the nasal lining
WHAT are Sinusitis Symptoms?
Sinusitis can present with a variety of symptoms. Consulting with a doctor is crucial for an accurate diagnosis and establishing the best treatment plan. Symptoms may include:
- Facial pain and/or pressure: Occurring around the eyes, nose, jaw and teeth
- Fatigue: Pain and congestion prevent restful sleep leading to tiredness
- Low grade fever
- Frequent stuffy nose and congestion: Swollen nasal passages make breathing difficult and results in a congested nose
- Blocked nasal passageways
- Decreased sense of smell and taste
- Headaches
- Postnasal drip: Mucus trickling from the back of the nose into the throat
- Nasal Discharge: Green or yellow mucus draining from the nose
WHAT are the Different Types of Sinusitis?
There are three primary categories of sinusitis: acute, chronic, and recurrent. Each type includes similar symptoms, but they vary in duration and recurrence.
- Acute Sinusitis: This type of sinusitis is short-term and typically occurs after a cold, lasting 7-10 days.
◦ Subacute Sinusitis: If your sinusitis lingers for about 6 weeks and then symptoms improve, this is referred to as a subacute infection. - Chronic Sinusitis: This type of infection can last for 12 weeks or more. While the severity of your symptoms may fluctuate, they will not resolve entirely.
- Recurrent Sinusitis: This type is characterized by four or more acute sinusitis infections in one calendar year. While you may experience relief between illnesses, the infections will persist.
WHAT is the Best Treatment for Sinusitis?
Sinusitis sufferers have a range of treatment options to consider with their provider, spanning from over-the-counter medications to surgical interventions.
- Medication: Depending on your symptoms, severity, and duration, our physician may recommend medications to help reduce your symptoms. Options include prescription, over-the-counter, and home remedies.
- Balloon Sinuplasty: Balloon sinuplasty, or balloon sinus dilation, is a minimally invasive procedure that gently enlarges your natural sinus openings in order to correct your drainage issues and correct your nasal anatomy.
- Sinus Surgery: Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) may be a suitable option for certain sinusitis sufferers. The goal of this procedure is to enhance your sinus drainage and overall function of your nasal anatomy by facilitating the natural flow of mucus and expanding your natural sinus openings. Balloon sinuplasty can be used in conjunction with a FESS procedure as well.
